Within Kuala Lumpur’s Tun Razak Exchange, Aesop’s space is an ode to teh tarik—seen not just as a drink, but rather as a liquid fusion of Malaysia’s multiculturalism and a metaphor for its strong sense of tolerance and diversity. Aesop’s in-house architects were inspired by the tea making process and the implements used. One tool in particular provided a material prompt: the humble linen tea strainer, which gradually takes on the colour of the beverage after weeks, months and years of diligent use.

In collaboration with local textile artist Muni Osman, the store was transformed into an amber-hued cocoon. Bolts of woven cotton were dyed with tea leaves and hung vertically to envelop the lofty room in a monochromatic play of translucency, warmth and softness. Abstracting the configuration of tea being poured into cups from on high, a quartet of basins embrace the tall structural column. Here, customers can immerse themselves in Aesop’s full range of formulations for the skin, hair, body and home, with dexterous consultants on hand to recommend the products best suited to individual needs.
